The 2027 Optiq Is Everything Cadillacs Were Not, and That Is a Good Thing

Decades ago, Cadillac seemed to abide by a “bigger is better” mentality. That’s not necessarily the case today. The 2027 Optiq , for instance, slots into the extremely popular compact crossover category, but delivers unparalleled levels of luxury, refinement, performance, and detail in a package that’s still easy to drive and maneuver. Michael Hohl Cadillac tells you more about Cadillac’s smallest EV. 

The Optiq’s crossover shape would also have been a shock half a century ago. Back then, the only long-roofed Cadillacs would either be an ambulance or hearse taking you to or from the hospital, respectively. Of course, what may have most shocked a Cadillac customer 50 years ago is the Optiq’s electric drivetrain, which delivers impressive performance while remaining glass-smooth and nearly silent – true Cadillac hallmarks.  

Despite being a fairly significant break from the Cadillacs of yesteryear, it’s still immediately apparent that the Optiq is a Cadillac through and through. The exterior design is upscale and artfully sculpted from head to toe. Optiq’s interior, with its 30-inch single-piece curved driver and center touchscreen displays, colored trim, high-quality switchgear, and mostly recycled yet high-quality materials, is a balanced blend of opulence and modernity. Thanks to Optiq’s 37.8 inches of rear legroom, Car and Driver notes, “the back seat passenger compartment is plenty comfortable and roomy enough for a pair of adults.”  

There are three drivetrains available in the 2027 Optiq. The single-motor models that were originally front-wheel drive switched to rear-wheel drive this past year for improved handling dynamics. Cadillac made the change without missing a beat, demonstrating the EV platform’s flexibility. The motor produces 315 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, which exceeds the output of any of those Cadillacs from 50 years ago. And because of the nature of electric motors, all power is available instantaneously; there is no need to work up to a peak rpm. Range is estimated at 317 miles, and compared to those old big Cadillacs that struggled to reach double-digit mpg, the MPGe figures (mpg equivalent of energy use) top three digits in the city (117) and combined (105), with the highway figure of 93.

Opting for the tractional optimization of all-wheel drive (AWD) gets you a second motor placed under the hood and a power output of 440 horsepower and 498 lb-ft of torque. This is more than could be dreamed of any Cadillac owner in the old big-block V8 days. Range for this model still tops the 300-mile threshold, at 303 miles.

Then there is the Optiq-V model, introduced for the 2026 model year. Still AWD, but now the two motors combine for 519 hp and 650 lb-ft of instantaneous torque. Now we are in what was recently supercar territory, reaching 60 mph from a stop in 3.5 seconds, according to Car and Driver, and going on to hit 100 mph in 9.0 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.2. MPGe is still 103 in the city, though the power brings the range down to 278 miles, or 250 miles for the faster-charging version. However, Edmunds found in their range test that the Optiq-V beat that figure at 281 miles.  

As part of delivering luxury, Cadillac went to great lengths to shield the driver and passengers from the noise and vibration of those big V8s.  But in the Optiq, all three of its drivetrains are naturally silent and smooth, delivering a luxury experience no old-school Cadillac could dream of.  And that makes it all the easier to enjoy the AKG stereo with 19 speakers and Dolby Atmos, which is standard on all models.  

Of course, all the expected safety and driver-assistance technologies are standard, including the SuperCruise highway hands-free driving system, which is unsurpassed in the industry.  

Times change, and Cadillac is leading the way, with the Optiq as the smallest of four luxury EV models the brand offers, and the lineup goes all the way up to the world-beating ultra-luxury Celestiq.
